Nehemiah 9

The months of the Fall Season every year is a time to give thanks to God for what He has provided us during the year. It is in this chapter nine of the Book of Nehemiah that we find God’s people counting God’s blessings by remembering His forgiveness of their past sins in the act of fasting and wearing sackcloth and putting dust on one’s head to show signs of sorrow and repentance after Ezra read the Law of Moses. Nehemiah led the rebuilding of the wall; Ezra led the spiritual revival of the nation. The people’s hearts were moved, rebuilt, and they wept openly when they heard God’s laws and realized how far they were from obeying them. Israel was devastated by times of intense rebellion and sin. Yet when they repented and returned to God, He delivered them. But Ezra told them they should be filled with joy because the day was holy. It was time to celebrate and to give gifts to those in need.
The Hebrews practiced open confession, admitting their sins to one another, preceded by the reading and studying God’s Word. The long summary of Israel’s history reminds the people of their great heritage and God’s promises; helping them avoid repeating their mistakes so that they can serve God better. We may witness how God continued to be with His people showing his amazing patience in their repeated failing, pride, and stubbornness, as He is always ready to forgive (9:17) and His Spirit is always ready to instruct (9:20). Realizing how God forgave them helps us forgive those who fail us (Matt.18:21-22). God’s unlimited mercy shows His limitless grace to all who come to obtain mercy.

Dear God, I thank you deeply for your grace of forgiveness of my sins. I have gone the wrong ways many times, yet your love and forgiveness have pulled me back to you. Gracious Lord Jesus, guide me today that as a follower of you, on the pathways to be a mature Christian in Christ in my deeds and speech. Help us understand what we should do to continue fervently the salvation work started since your ascension, and how we would extend it to be proclaimed to the ends of the earth for the redemption of your people before your coming back. May the Holy Spirit continue to guide us to live a holy life so that your light of glory and truth will shine upon us all who seek your presence.
