HNM CANstruction

“How CAN you fight hunger?”

Welcome to HNM CANstruction! This is our annual cross-congregational challenge to the SCBC people. Teams are to design and build their structures using only can goods and other non-perishable items. Their constructions will be judged by their nutritious value, architectural ingenuity, and of course, by their popularity.

In the end, all food items will go towards supporting our local food bank partners in the Scarborough community. Challenge is open to people of all ages.

Your structure

The maximum size of any structure is limited to your assigned space. The team must submit sketches/renderings of the structure. Props are prohibited – if props are used, 5 votes would be deduced for each prop used (examples of props are cloth, tinfoil, cardboard, paper, and rubber bands). Your structure must be self-supporting. Teams may use temporary adhesives such as clear and/or double-sided tape. Permanent adhesives or glue may NOT be used.

Your donatable items

Aluminum canned goods of all sizes may be used, however, some food manufacturers are switching to plastic. Packaged food of other types may also be used to accent your structure. Cans must be full, unopened and unaltered, with labels intact and legible. Labels may not be covered, stripped off or altered in any way. However, a single layer of clear packaging tape may be used over the top of cans. Cans may not be painted or glued. All canned goods used in the challenge from all teams will be donated to local food banks for distribution to individuals in our community.

Judges

The building site will be open in the morning of each Sunday in November to showcase each team’s structure and Judging will take place during the morning of each Sunday in November/December. The judges will interpret the Canstruction Challenge Rules & Regulations in making their decisions. Members and guests of Scarborough Chinese Baptist Church will also be able to cast their votes on each structure on Sunday.

Awards

Awards will be given in the following four (4) categories:

  • Most Nutritious Meal – Products used in the structure that could make a dish or a complete meal that is most nutritious for families
  • Structural Ingenuity – How did they get that to stand? Extraordinary structural supports, balance and gravity-defying designs will wow judges
  • Judges Favourite
  • People’s Choice – Structure with the largest number of public votes

Questions

If at any time any team has questions or inquiries, they can be directed to any Hunger No More team member or directly emailed their questions to [email protected]
