This is a story that has taken years to develop. Little by little, event by event, we follow the narrative as we get closer and closer to the final, climactic event. Characters are introduced, challenges are accepted, and powers beyond imagination are displayed. We can feel it. We can taste it. The big explosion of story is about to happen, and we have a front row seat.<\/p>\n<p>No, I am not talking about Avengers: Infinity War. While Marvel Studios has done an incredible job walking us through the slowly marinating narrative of this superhero team and its members, we are privileged to be able to experience an even more incredible story: God leading the Israelites out of bondage in Egypt. Here is a story where an entire nation, consisting of millions of people, are held under the chains of slavery. They cry out for deliverance, and if I were them, I would expect a grand general on horseback, at the front of legions of imposing soldiers. I would want my masters, the Egyptians, to quake in their boots. I would want to see the look on their faces when they see this general marching into the capital, into Pharoah&#8217;s court, drawing his sword, and demanding the surrender of one of the most powerful nations on Earth.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, the Israelites get a stutterer with a staff. Instead, the Israelites wonder what is going on with all of the weird weather they have been getting. They wonder what could possibly have possessed the animals to behave the way that they do. I might be scratching my head too.<\/p>\n<p>But the truth of the story is apparent and awesome: The Israelites ask for deliverance, and it is none other than God fighting for their freedom. Imagine that! Imagine expecting a human being to be a hero and save you, and instead you get God himself!<\/p>\n<p>I encourage you all to read through the narrative in Exodus 7-13 ahead of this Sunday&#8217;s service. God is forming us to bless, through remembering that yes, God can. It is God who challenges the perceived, yet ultimately empty, power of Pharoah and Egypt. It is God, who performs wonders which cannot easily be dismissed, so that everyone on Earth would know that yes, He can. It is God who brings judgment on the Egyptians, and yet saves the Israelites through a sacrifice of blood. It is God who uses the end of this period of suffering in Israel&#8217;s history as a beginning: the beginning of the nation of Israel, God&#8217;s holy nation, His nation of priests. It is God, who uses the Passover event as a point of remembering, so that it would point towards an even greater climax in the redemptive story, our salvation with the blood of Jesus and his sacrifice for us on the cross. We can only be saved by God. Yes, God can.<\/p>\n<p>How does our remembrance of these events, form us to bless others?
