The way in which we answer this question can be quite revealing. It can show us our hopes, desires, and dreams. It can describe what will lead to satisfaction and fulfillment in our lives. It can also paint a picture of what we believe is ideal and the ultimate achievement. These types of questions and reflections have existed and answered in various ways throughout history.

Jesus was aware that his disciples thought of this question and provided an answer that they were not expecting. He told them that to be great is to become a servant and slave of all. He told them to resist thinking about authority and power as possessions to use over people, but rather, to see that we can follow His example of giving Himself up for the sake of many. These upside-down values of the Kingdom no doubt were received with confusions, doubts, and convictions, both in their day as in ours. But as we see in Jesus’ death and resurrection, these claims are vindicated and the way to life is to lose it for His sake.

Pastor Jon Nip

PRAY

Lord Jesus, help us to understand and take your words to heart and in our actions.
