{"id":14500,"date":"2023-11-05T09:30:00","date_gmt":"2023-11-05T14:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.scbc.com\/em\/?post_type=ctc_sermon&#038;p=14500"},"modified":"2023-11-07T10:26:25","modified_gmt":"2023-11-07T15:26:25","slug":"14500","status":"publish","type":"ctc_sermon","link":"https:\/\/www.scbc.com\/em\/sermons\/14500\/","title":{"rendered":"Antioch: The Model Missional Church"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-gdm-google-drive-embedder-viewer\"><iframe width='100%' height='100' frameborder='0' scrolling='yes' src='https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1SUIoxhPHKu7odWixOk3nBKaT8maRYF6n\/preview?usp=drivesdk' allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n\n\n<h6 class=\"p1\"><b>READ<\/b><\/h6>\n<p class=\"p3\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Acts 11:19-30<\/p>\n<h6 class=\"p5\"><b>CONSIDER<\/b><\/h6>\n<p class=\"p3\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">What is the significance of the church at Antioch being firstly called Christians (Acts 11:26), and what impact has it played as a model of a <i>missional church<\/i>?<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Firstly: It was absolutely the wonderful work of God that shaped them at Antioch when started by Paul and Barnabas, led and taught by the Holy Spirit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><i>\u201cMeanwhile, the believers who had scattered during the persecution after Stephen\u2019s death traveled as far as Phoenicia, Cyprus, and Antioch of Syria.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>They preached the word of God, but only to Jews.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>However, some of the believers who went to Antioch from Cyprus and Cyrene began preaching to the Gentiles about the Lord Jesus.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The power of the Lord was with them, and a large number of these Gentiles believed and turned to the Lord.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>When the church at Jerusalem heard what had happened, they sent Barnabas to Antioch.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>When he arrived and saw this evidence of God\u2019s he was filled with joy, and he encouraged the believers to stay true to the Lord.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Barnabas was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and strong in faith.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>And many people were brought to the Lord.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>(NLT.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Acts 11:19-24)<\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Paul and Barnabas stayed at Antioch for a full year, teaching the new believers, recognizing the importance of follow-through discipleship and training and walking alongside them in their growth.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The young church at Antioch was a curious mixture of Jews (who spoke Greek or Aramaic) and Gentiles.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The believers were first called Christians (or \u201cChrist-ones\u201d) here because all they had was Christ, not race, culture or even language.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Christ\u2019s love crosses all boundaries and can unify all types of people.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Secondly: The church at Antioch took action in obeying the leading of the Holy Spirit in seeing to the need of the church in Judea by sending them the relief for the famine (v.27-30).<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The daughter church in Antioch had enough to be able to help the established church in Jerusalem.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>We are reminded here that God wants unity among believers within individual churches and supportive relationships between fellow churches too.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The Holy Spirit binds them all together, causing them to care about the needs of others.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cWe are God\u2019s fellow workers; God\u2019s field; God\u2019s building.\u201d (1 Cor.3:9).<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Are we prepared to be ready for action when God calls us to help and build up one another; help me see what would be the most essential characteristics I should practise in my life-time in how to listen to you and others, and practice it in order to be a spiritually mature Christian.
